The FDA sought market withdrawal of propoxyphene after receiving new clinical data showing that the drug puts patients at risk of potentially serious or even fatal heart rhythm abnormalities. As a result of these data, combined with other information, including new epidemiological data, the agency concluded that the risks of the medication outweigh the benefits.


Propoxyphene is used to relieve mild to moderate pain.

This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.Propoxyphene is in a group of drugs called narcotic pain relievers.
Acetaminophen is a less potent pain reliever and a fever reducer that increases the effects of propoxyphene.

This medicine is a combination of a narcotic analgesic and acetaminophen used to relieve mild to moderate pain with or without fever.

Propoxyphene comes as a capsule to take by mouth. It usually is taken every 4 hours as needed. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take propoxyphene exactly as directed.

Propoxyphene can be habit-forming.

Tell your doctor if you drink more than three alcoholic bevarages per day or if you have ever had alcoholic liver disease cirrhosis. You may not be able to take medication that contains acetaminophen.
Propoxyphene may be habit - forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for .
Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it .Darvocet can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
Tell your doctor if the medicine seems to stop working as well in relieving your pain.

If overdose is suspected contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include unusual sleepiness slow shallow breathing cold clammy skin seizures nausea vomiting excessive sweating dark urine stomach pain extreme fatigue and loss of consciousness.

Propoxyphene usually is taken as needed. If your doctor has told you to take propoxyphene regularly take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However if it is almost time for the next dose skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Keep this medication in the container it came in tightly closed and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture not in the bathroom. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and pets. If using this medicine for an extended period of time obtain refills before your supply runs out.

Although side effects from propoxyphene are not common they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

dizziness
lightheadedness
drowsiness
upset stomach
vomiting
constipation
stomach pain
skin rash
mood changes
headache
If you experience the following symptom call your doctor immediately:

difficulty breathing
